Only the best

Wouldn't it be great if we could choose, before we are born
which of our parents' characteristics we wanted?
If we could, in effect, from a limited list,
choose who we are to be?
~
What would you choose?
~
From my mom, I would choose
creativity
the ability to speak up for myself
the ability to make friends easily
to connect with strangers
honesty
determination
sense of family
and her pleasure at simple things
~
From my Dad I would choose
knowledge
humour
down to earthedness
determination
honesty
openess with affection
creativity
sense of preconception
and being secure in the knowledge that he can do anything he sets his mind to
~
What would you choose??

  3. Isn't that the truth? Choosing would have been awesome! I have one daughter who swears she has been swimming in the slum end of the gene pool her entire life. (I don't feel too terribly sorry for her. She's pretty terrific just as she is!)

  4. Ahhh, What a lovely idea! I don't have time to write mine down (on my way out the door). But the positive side is our struggles made us who we are today, and that's just who we are supposed to be in this life to learn the lessons we are supposed to learn and be the teachers we are supposed to be. But I can't say I haven't dreamed of my ideal parents NUMEROUS times!

  5. What a wonderful idea...I'll have to think about it for my parents too. My sons seem to have all the good things from both sides and hardly any of the disadvantages...that's probably just the innocence of childhood so far though.

  6. This is a fabulous post! From my mom -- I'd choose her ability to move through her illness with grace, good smiles (even when it's tough) and courage and determination; I'd choose her absolute always-joy for life; her belief that "you can do anything if you really work at it" and her sense of fun. She was so loved.

From my dad I'd pick his devotion, his ability to communicate (sometimes, too much -- so that's a caution!) and also his creativity. It's hard for me to remember the time when he had the most wonderful sense of humor -- his illness drew all that from him; but I'd like to think I have that.

I WISH I didn't have my mom's hips and build and my dad's lung issues!

  7. I am not sure I would have chosen any differently to what I was given. I think I got the best bits of both of them.

  9. Something that I've noticed over the years is that some the characteristics displayed by my parents that irriated me the most when I was young are now the things I most admire about them. They absolutely NEVER complain about a thing and are content with their lives.

Joyce, it was sweet of you to take the time to leave a comment on Phillip's blog. He'll be here on Sunday to read the comments. He's pretty good with the camera, but stingy with the written word. Thanks.

  10. Undoubtedly, a father and a mother and children are to be divine. A greeting.
